This appellation is divided into two sections – North and South – separated by a line following the road out of Beaune up towards Bouze-Lès-Beaune. In old French, the word Grèves meant a sandy soil well-suited to vine cultivation.
Les Grèves is certainly one of the best-known of Beaune’s 1er crus (accounting for 74 acres). Seen from above, it forms a square block with due easterly exposure, taking up the full length of the hill along a gentle slope.
Aged on the lees for 16 months with no racking using a proportion of 40% new French oak barrels that had been toasted at low temperatures for a long time to impart a very delicate touch of oak to the wine.
On the nose its presents of a discreet woodiness accompanies blackberry aromas and on the palate its shows a silky, tannic quality forms a fairly powerful structure.
