St George Distillery produces a variety of highly artisanal craft spirits, and this one is aptly named Botanivore, which means ‘botanical eater’! 19 botanicals are used here, from the classic ones to bay laurel, bergamot peel, black peppercorn, caraway, cilantro, Citra hops, dill seed, fennel seed and ginger being the more unusual ones. After careful distillation and steeping, the result is one of the most ‘friendly’ gins on the market. On the nose, the gin is fresh and clean with menthol, juniper and coriander. The savoury notes of bay also lurk in the background. On the palate, the juniper isn’t in the foreground but integrated into the other botanicals, which support each other well. Earthy spices first, then moving on into floral and citrus. The finish is herbaceous and fresh. This makes for an amazing Martini or G&T. Pairs perfectly with East Imperial Burma and Old World Tonic.
